Silicon Speech Toastmasters (SST) met in the Zoom room, once again, in our never-ending pursuit of excellence in online performance. Karan Bavandi was at the helm as Toastmaster keeping the train on the tracks and skillfully guiding us through the Agenda. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention one of the most relatable opening jokes I’ve heard during these challenging times which was delivered by Joke Master, Sam Nazarian. It went something like, “Everyone wearing a mask and glasses during the pandemic deserves… condensation.” I second that motion.
Luis Hurtado was our first speaker and he gave us a look behind the Corona Virus headlines and an explanation of what all those graphs and charts mean. Unfortunately, the virus isn’t “magically fading away” but he did give us the tools to assess the available information and get an actual idea of what’s going on. In other words, I’m going to wear my mask for a while longer.
Alex Schams was up next with a speech about his main mentor, his father, Bob Schams (and just in time for Father’s Day). It was a moving tribute and a speech every parent would love to hear their child deliver. And, guess what, Alex? Dad can watch your speech and a recording of the entire meeting thanks to First Laddie, Luis Hurtado and his efforts to keep the club “Tech Forward”.
The speeches were followed by fugacious but constructive evaluations by Sam Nazarian and Li Xin. This set the stage for Table Topics handled adroitly by TTM, Len Kung. This is one of my favorite parts of the meeting because the questions are always on point and the answers give us the opportunity to learn more about our fellow members. For instance, Shar Mcbee now has a 100, year-old mentor (proving it’s never too late), Armando Yee likes to fish in a dreamlike state and if you’re running short of rice during the quarantine, we have a connection for you by the name of Veronica. Speaking of such, here’s a special shout-out to guest Veronica Rosas. Thanks for joining and we hope to see you again, soon.
All in all, it was another great night at SST and congratulations to Luis Hurtado and Alex Schams who achieved their Pathways Level 3 and Level 2 designations, respectfully, with the speeches they gave last night and helped the club on its way to becoming Presidents Distinguished.
