The perfect Toastmasters meeting is, of course, a chimera but we’re getting closer every week. Last night was something special. Luis Hurtado introduced a platform that members can use to perfect their presenting skills called Silicon Speech Shark Tank. Luis was completing a Pathways Level 4 project and did so by pitching his new web service, PotluckParty.com to fellow members (the sharks) who peppered him with tough questions so he could practice “adjusting to unexpected changes to his final plan” as required by the assignment. Sam Nazarian, our Toastmaster and show host appeared in front of the actual set of the Shark Tank TV show which added a bit of authenticity. I wouldn’t be surprised to see other members enter the Shark Tank in weeks to come to pitch their new idea or project and develop the skills they’ll need to close the deal.
Here’s the cool part; when I was going through my Facebook news feed this morning, there was a video of Luis doing his presentation. He reminded me that whether we’re speaking in-person in front of a group or addressing the members on a Zoom call, it’s all what is known today as “creating content”. I encourage all the members to follow Luis’ lead and develop their idea, present it in a meeting and send it out to a wider audience. It’s how things are done in 2020.
And, that’s not all. A special shout out to members and guests who were doing roles for the first time. Blake Samuelle did a great job in her first time as Timer and Kenzi Rose was extremely diligent as Ah Counter. Genevieve Kelly did a great job in her first turn as our Table Topics Master. Genevieve asked members actual questions that she had been asked in past job interviews. They ranged from “What’s your superpower?” to “If you had a time machine, where would you go?”. Great answers from Shar McBee, Joelle Johnson, Kenzi Rose, Rafael Macho, Blake Samuelle, Sam Nazarian and Karan Bavandi. It was terrific practice for that next big job opportunity.
I’d also like to thank Alec Charbonneau and Rafael Macho for joining us as guests last night. All that and the group got a chance to play with the new Zoom filters. What a night!
