Meeting Minutes – 07.09.2020

Hi Everyone,

It was our first meeting of the new Toastmaster (fiscal) year and dignitaries were in the house! I would like to thank our new Division A Director, Ed Coffey and our new Area Director, Carla Taravella for dropping by and even volunteering to be our Chief Evaluator and Evaluator #2, respectively. I was Toastmaster and it was my privilege to introduce two terrific speeches. Karan Bavandi was up first and he, once again, enlightened the membership with The Life and Teachings of Krishnamurti. He pointed out that it would be great if we all studied Krishnamurti’s teachings as we work to construct our post-pandemic world. Well said.

A special thanks to Armando Yee for volunteering to be Speaker #2 at the last minute. He gave a great speech about the lessons he’s learned by directing television coverage of live sporting events. The speech, complete with visuals, was called, Lessons from Inside the Control Room and included great information we can all use in our everyday lives. Something tells me he may have had this speech in his back pocket which is a great idea because you never know when you’ll have a chance to stand and deliver! Well done, Armando!

The speeches were followed by insightful and constructive evaluations by Luis Hurtado and the aforementioned Carla Terravella then Len Kung was up as our Table Topics Master. Len’s questions centered around “Liberty” which was quite appropriate after the 4th of July holiday. They ranged from, “If you had the liberty to spend $10,000 a day on non-material experiences, what would you do?” Alex Shams would hit the road for Southeast Asia and Italy (not a bad idea). And, “If you had the liberty to cast yourself in a Tom Cruise movie, what movie would it be?” This question led to a big discussion about all things TC. Who knew that there was such a thing as “vintage” Tom Cruise and Joelle Johnson has a thing for it? Who knew? All in all, it was a great meeting and so good to get back together again.
